Character & Training

Oriental Shorthairs are highly intelligent and extremely lively cats that constantly demand attention from their humans. They are very trainable and can often be taught to perform tricks, like fetching, similar to dogs. Their talkative nature is expressed through a varied range of meows, clearly communicating their desires. They are extremely affectionate and constantly seek the company of their owners, rarely wanting to be alone. Training requires patience and consistent, positive reinforcement to channel their excess energy. Without sufficient stimulation, they may use their intelligence to get into mischief.

Living & Exercise

Because they are very active, Oriental Shorthairs need plenty of space for climbing, running, and playing. A well-structured cat tree and intelligent puzzle toys are essential to keep them physically and mentally occupied. They are well-suited for indoor living, provided the human invests sufficient time in interactive play. A secured balcony is often highly appreciated, as they love to observe everything from an elevated position. They generally get along excellently with other cats and, due to their social nature, should ideally not be kept as an only cat.

Health & Grooming

This breed is robust and features a very short coat that is almost free of undercoat, requiring minimal grooming. Occasional brushing is enough to remove loose hair and maintain its natural shine. However, Oriental Shorthairs are predisposed to certain genetic conditions, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), and should therefore have regular veterinary check-ups. Dental health should also be closely monitored in this breed. A balanced, high-quality diet supports their active lifestyle and keeps their coat shiny. Overall, the maintenance effort is very low compared to other breeds.

History

The roots of the Oriental Shorthair lie with the Siamese cat, as they are essentially the same breed but without the typical point coloration. In the 1950s, breeders in Great Britain began deliberately breeding cats with the Siamese build but in different colors and patterns. Through crossbreeding with various breeds, including the British Shorthair and Abyssinian, the enormous color variety we see today was developed. The breed quickly gained popularity and international recognition, with the focus always remaining on the elegant type and lively temperament. Today, it is one of the most popular breeds among lovers of spirited and intelligent cats.
