Character & Training

The Balinese cat is an extremely intelligent and trainable breed that interacts closely with its owners. Known for being very talkative, she enjoys sharing her opinions through a variety of vocalizations. Her personality is playful and lively, often remaining active well into old age. Because she forms strong social bonds, she absolutely requires company and should never be kept alone. Clicker training and puzzle toys stimulate her curiosity and keep her mentally challenged. She is an excellent family cat that actively demands attention and affection.

Living & Exercise

An environment with plenty of action and climbing opportunities is ideal for a Balinese. Because she is highly active, she needs a varied daily routine with cat trees, shelves, or secure outdoor access. Pure indoor living is possible but requires intensive interaction and plenty of toys to avoid boredom. A secure balcony is highly appreciated by this inquisitive cat. She should always have a feline companion by her side to meet her social needs. She is not a fan of being left alone for long periods and needs her humans as playmates.

Health & Grooming

Balinese cats are generally very healthy and can reach a ripe old age with good care. Their fur is medium-length, fine, and has almost no undercoat, which makes grooming easier. Weekly brushing is usually sufficient to remove loose hair and maintain their silky appearance. As with related breeds, one should be aware of breed-specific predispositions, such as in the respiratory or cardiovascular systems. A balanced, high-quality diet helps prevent obesity, as their elegant, slender physique should be maintained. Regular veterinary check-ups are essential.

History

The Balinese cat emerged in the United States in the mid-20th century as a long-haired variant of the Siamese cat. Originally, these long-haired kittens in Siamese litters were considered an undesirable deviation. However, some breeders recognized the beauty and potential of these animals and began breeding them selectively. The name 'Balinese' was chosen because the cats' elegant movements were reminiscent of the graceful dancers on Bali. Although they have no biological connection to the Indonesian island, the name has become established worldwide. Today, it is recognized as an independent, cherished breed in major cat associations.
