Character & Training

The Thai Cat is known for its intelligent, curious, and extremely sociable nature. It is strongly focused on its human companions and wants to be involved in all household activities. This breed is very communicative and uses its voice purposefully to demand attention or to 'discuss' matters with its owner. It is playful, agile, and enjoys learning tricks or games. Due to its high social needs, it does not like being left alone and prefers company.

Living & Exercise

As it is very active and intelligent, the Thai Cat requires a varied environment with plenty of stimulation. It benefits from climbing opportunities, scratching posts, and interactive toys to satisfy its hunting instincts. Apartment living is possible if there is enough space and human attention. Ideally, it should not be kept as a single cat, as it enjoys the company of other cats. A secured balcony or outdoor enclosure can help satisfy its need for variety.

Health & Grooming

The Thai Cat is generally considered a robust and healthy breed without many hereditary problems. Its coat is short, silky, and has almost no undercoat, making grooming very straightforward; weekly brushing is completely sufficient. One should pay attention to good dental care and a balanced diet to maintain its weight, as it is very active. Regular vet visits for check-ups are important, as with any breed, to promote its health into old age.

History

The Thai Cat, also known in its home country as 'Wichien Maat', is the original form of the modern Siamese cat. While breeding in Western countries for decades shifted towards a very slim, extreme type, the classic, sturdier body structure was preserved in Thailand. Since the late 20th century, this original form has been deliberately preserved and bred as the separate 'Thai' breed. It has a long history, during which it was highly valued in its country of origin as a temple cat and companion to nobility.
