Character & Training

The Tonkinese is considered extremely intelligent, curious, and playful. She is strongly attached to her humans and wants to be involved in everything rather than just watching from the sidelines. Because of her friendly nature, she is easy to train but requires consistent, loving engagement. She is very communicative and enjoys expressing her opinions with a gentle, melodic meow. Since she is very sociable, she should never be left alone for long periods. Puzzle toys and clicker training are excellent ways to keep her mentally stimulated.

Living & Exercise

Because she is very active, the Tonkinese needs a stimulating environment with climbing and playing opportunities. Living indoors is possible, provided that enough interaction and enrichment are offered. She greatly appreciates secured balconies or a cat-safe garden to satisfy her urge to explore. Due to her social nature, she benefits immensely from having a feline companion. She is not a pet for people who are out of the house all day and have little time for play sessions.

Health & Grooming

This breed is generally considered robust and healthy, with a refreshingly long life expectancy. Since she has little undercoat, she should be protected from extreme cold and drafts. Coat care is extremely simple: brushing once or twice a week is enough to keep her silky fur shiny. Regular veterinary health checks and high-quality nutrition are the foundation for a long, happy cat life. Genetic diseases are rare with responsible breeding.

History

The history of the Tonkinese began in the 1960s when breeders in North America aimed to combine the qualities of the Siamese and Burmese in one breed. The cat 'Wong Mau', who came to San Francisco in 1930, is considered the foundation cat. For a long time, she was known as a 'Golden Siamese' or 'Siamese-Burmese hybrid' before the name Tonkinese was established. Breeding focused on crossing the robustness of the Burmese with the elegance of the Siamese. Today, she is a recognized breed, appreciated worldwide for her unique color variations and charming personality.
