Character & Training

Character & Training: Poodles are exceptionally intelligent, eager to learn, and highly versatile companions. Ranked as one of the world's smartest breeds, they possess a strong „will to please“ and excel in various activities, from competitive dog sports to therapy work. Their temperament is lively, affectionate, and often quite humorous. They form intense bonds with their families and are generally easy to train, provided they receive consistent mental stimulation. A Poodle thrives on cognitive challenges rather than just physical exercise.

Living & Exercise

Living & Exercise: Whether living in a city apartment or a rural estate, Poodles adapt seamlessly to their surroundings as long as they remain close to their humans. They are highly social and dislike being left alone for long periods. Daily walks and cognitive games are essential for their well-being. While Toy and Miniature varieties are perfectly suited for urban living, larger Standard Poodles require more space and vigorous outdoor activity to stay physically and mentally balanced.

Health & Grooming

Health & Grooming: The Poodle's curly, non-shedding coat makes them a popular choice for allergy sufferers, but it demands high maintenance. Professional grooming and daily brushing are mandatory to prevent painful matting. Generally robust, the breed is prone to certain hereditary issues like hip dysplasia in larger dogs or luxating patella and PRA in smaller variants. Regular ear cleaning is vital, as hair growth inside the canal can lead to infections. Choosing a reputable breeder is key to long-term health.

History

History: Originally developed in Germany as a specialized water retriever for duck hunting, the Poodle's name comes from „pudeln“, meaning „to splash“. France later refined the breed into the elegant companion we know today, making it their national dog. Traditional clips were once purely functional: leaving hair on the chest and joints protected vital organs and limbs from cold water, while a shaved back improved swimming efficiency and overall mobility during the hunt.
