Character & Training

The Bichon Frise is the embodiment of optimism. Its nature is defined by gentle intelligence and boundless curiosity. Highly willing to learn, they cooperate beautifully in training when met with positive reinforcement. Their inherent sensitivity requires a soft touch; they may withdraw if treated harshly. As a quintessential social dog, they constantly seek interaction, enriching family life with their playful yet never overbearing presence and affectionate spirit.

Living & Exercise

Thanks to its compact size and balanced temperament, the Bichon is an ideal urban companion. It adapts flexibly to various living situations, provided it remains close to its owners. While its exercise needs are moderate, it thrives on varied walks and mental stimulation. Extended periods of isolation should be avoided, as this little 'powder puff' does not tolerate loneliness well and prefers being an integral part of all daily family activities.

Health & Grooming

While generally hardy, their health requires dedicated attention. The breed is prone to patellar luxation and dental issues, making oral hygiene essential. The striking curly coat is allergy-friendly but extremely high-maintenance. Without daily brushing and professional grooming every six weeks, the dense undercoat mats quickly. Additionally, the eye area must be cleaned regularly to prevent irritation from the light hair and to effectively manage the formation of tear stains.

History

The Bichon’s roots lie in the Mediterranean, where it was once prized by sailors as a popular trade item. It was particularly prevalent in Tenerife before conquering French nobility in the 14th century. Rising to become a favorite of Renaissance courts, it graced the royal salons of kings. Following the French Revolution, it transitioned from an aristocratic lapdog to a clever circus performer, which explains its modern-day agility and remarkable eagerness to learn.
