Character & Training

Persian cats are characterized by an extremely gentle, calm, and patient temperament. They are considered very people-oriented and enjoy being petted extensively. Despite their laid-back nature, they are intelligent and easy to train with gentle guidance. Aggressiveness is completely foreign to this breed, making them ideal family members. They prefer a quiet environment without much hustle and bustle and feel most comfortable in harmonious households.

Living & Exercise

Due to their moderate need for exercise, the Persian cat is perfectly suited for indoor living. They do not require huge climbing structures, but they do appreciate cozy retreats and elevated perches from which to observe the surroundings. Extensive play sessions with a feather wand or gentle interaction are important for their mental stimulation. A secured balcony is gratefully accepted in good weather but is not an absolute requirement for their well-being.

Health & Grooming

The magnificent, long coat requires daily, thorough grooming to prevent matting. This is not just a cosmetic necessity, but also serves their general well-being. Due to the breed's standard, issues related to an extremely shortened nose (brachycephaly) can occur, such as respiratory problems or tear duct issues. Furthermore, regular screening for the hereditary kidney disease PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) is standard among responsible breeders. A balanced diet helps minimize obesity and coat problems.

History

The history of the Persian cat dates back a long way to the Orient, where long-haired cats were considered particularly precious early on. In the 17th century, the first specimens reached Italy and France through travelers like Pietro della Valle. Through selective breeding, particularly in Great Britain, the modern form developed with its striking body structure and lush coat. Over the centuries, the breed has evolved into one of the most popular and well-known breeds worldwide, bred in countless color variations.
