Character & Training

The Elo stands out for its extraordinary composure and high tolerance, making it a perfect partner for children. Its nature is characterized by playfulness and a profound bond with its owners. Since breeding specifically focuses on a low prey drive, training is generally straightforward. Nevertheless, this intelligent breed requires gentle yet consistent guidance to fully realize its potential and eagerness to learn, ensuring it becomes a well-adjusted and harmonious member of the household.

Living & Exercise

Whether in a city apartment or a house with a garden, the Elo adapts flexibly to its surroundings. Its exercise needs are moderate; daily walks and mental stimulation are sufficient to keep it content. This breed is not suited for kennel life, as it thrives on direct family contact. Thanks to its calm indoor demeanor and lack of aggression, it also makes for a pleasant companion in office environments or public spaces like restaurants.

Health & Grooming

The breed is considered very robust and long-lived, thanks to strict health screenings mandated by the breeding organization. Particular focus is placed on preventing hip dysplasia and eye conditions. Grooming requirements depend on the coat type: while the smooth-coated variety is relatively low-maintenance, the rough-haired Elo needs regular brushing to prevent matting. A significant benefit for many owners is the breed's minimal doggy odor, making life together particularly pleasant and clean.

History

The Elo’s story began in Germany in 1987, driven by the vision of Marita and Heinz Szobries. Their goal was to create a dog combining the best traits of the Eurasier, Bobtail, and Chow-Chow. Later, Samoyed and Dalmatian genetics were introduced to refine the breed. As the name is trademarked, breeding remains subject to rigorous quality controls that prioritize health and temperament over purely aesthetic standards or formal show recognition.
