Character & Training

The Coton de Tuléar is a joyful, affectionate companion often referred to as the ultimate 'anti-stress dog.' Known for its remarkable empathy and sunny disposition, this breed thrives on human interaction. These dogs are highly intelligent and eager to please, making training a rewarding experience even for first-time owners. Their social nature allows them to bond deeply with family members while remaining friendly and approachable toward strangers.

Living & Exercise

Extremely adaptable, the Coton fits perfectly into various living situations, from small city apartments to large suburban homes. The most vital requirement for their well-being is proximity to their family; they do not tolerate isolation well. While they enjoy spirited play sessions and daily walks, their exercise needs are moderate compared to larger breeds. This makes them excellent companions for city dwellers who provide consistent attention.

Health & Grooming

Generally robust and long-lived, the Coton can reach an impressive age of 16 years or more. Its signature cotton-like coat is low-shedding and often suitable for allergy sufferers, but it demands daily grooming to prevent matting. Potential health concerns include patellar luxation and hereditary eye issues. Proper dental hygiene and a balanced diet are essential to maintain their vigor, ensuring these fluffy companions stay active throughout their senior years.

History

Originating from the port of Tuléar in Madagascar, this breed’s ancestors likely arrived via shipwrecks centuries ago. They eventually became the 'Royal Dog of Madagascar,' a title reflecting their exclusive status among the island's nobility. For a long time, their export was strictly controlled, preserving the breed's unique characteristics in isolation. It wasn't until the 1970s that they were introduced to Europe, where they gained a devoted following.
