Health & Grooming

Health & Grooming: Generally robust, the breed is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). Their unique double coat is dense and oily, providing insulation in freezing water; it should rarely be bathed with soap to maintain its water-repellent properties. Regular brushing to remove dead hair is sufficient. Owners should also be mindful of bloat (GDV) by managing meal times and activity levels properly.

History

History: The breed originated from two puppies, Sailor and Canton, rescued from an English shipwreck off the coast of Maryland in 1807. These survivors were bred with local hounds and spaniels to develop a retriever capable of braving the icy, turbulent waters of the Chesapeake Bay. The result was a tireless worker that could retrieve hundreds of waterfowl in a single day, cementing its status as a legendary American sporting dog.
