Character & Training

The British Shorthair is considered the epitome of balance. She is naturally patient, peace-loving, and rarely rattled. Her temperament is moderate; while she enjoys playing, she spends much time observing or lounging relaxed. Thanks to her uncomplicated nature, she integrates well into daily life and accepts changes calmly. While very affectionate, she is by no means pushy, as she values her independence.

Living & Exercise

Since the BSH has no excessive climbing ambitions, she is the ideal indoor cat. Nevertheless, she should be provided with sufficient scratching options and cozy retreat spots to satisfy her need for security. She enjoys quiet play sessions but is not an 'action junkie'. A secured balcony is often appreciated as a lookout platform. Due to her laid-back nature, she is predestined for a relaxed indoor life.

Health & Grooming

The British Shorthair is a robust and resilient breed with a long lifespan. Due to her dense coat, she should be brushed regularly, especially during shedding seasons. Genetically, attention should be paid to a potential predisposition for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) and Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), which is why reputable breeders test their cats. A balanced diet is important, as the breed can be prone to obesity.

History

The roots of the British Shorthair go back to the domestic cats brought to Great Britain by traders in ancient Rome. Over centuries of selection in the harsh climate, these cats developed into sturdy animals. In the 19th century, systematic breeding began to preserve the 'British cat'. After the World Wars, the breed was refined by crossing with Persian cats, which solidified her current striking, round appearance and dense coat.
